Neuropsychological testing is a comprehensive procedure that measures and identifies the interaction between cognition, processing capacities, and psychological functioning and their impact on academic and daily behavior. This sort of comprehensive testing is recommended for cases in which a detailed but general overview of functioning is requested. Neuropsychological testing provides quantifiable data about the following mental functions:

    Short-term and long-term memory
Intelligence
Problem solving and conceptualizing
Ability to learn new skills and solve problems
Attention, concentration, and distractibility
Logical and abstract reasoning functions
Ability to understand and express language
Visual-spatial organization Visual-motor coordination
Planning, synthesizing and organizing abilities
Functional impacts on learning and information recall
Academic achievement
Impact on the way a person thinks and feels as a result of the way their brain uses information

A neuropsychological evaluation will serve to confirm or clarify diagnoses such as, dementing conditions (e.g., Alzheimer’s), developmental learning disabilities, attention/executive functioning disorders, developmental disabilities, and the effects of toxic chemicals or chronic substance abuse, to name but a few.

Testing results will offer specific recommendations to educators, consultants and employers, which can help the child, adolescent or adult adapt to the work or school setting.

We invite you to contact our office manager, Ms. Christine Kutt, to discuss your needs and how we can best be of service to you. Ms. Kutt can be reached directly at (703) 723-2999.

Developmental testing examines and analyzes what an infant or toddler can and cannot do using a standardized set of questions, procedures and methods. The results of these inquiries can be quantified. This information helps parents and clinicians understand how a child compares to a population of children who are developing normally and points to developmental domains that need intervention.

As children develop, some may demonstrate social, communication and problem solving skills at a slower or inconsistent rate, which in turn, impedes their development. Developmental testing will serve to identify if a child is experiencing within normal range weaknesses or more pervasive deficits/impairment (e.g. Autism or Asperger’s Disorder). Sensory Processing Disorder, Hyperlexia and other pervasive developmental delays or conditions are identified through developmental testing.

Ashburn Psychological Services developmental testing assesses language, social skills, motor skills, attachment, memory, sense of self and family dynamics. Parents are given a “map” that helps them understand their child’s unique temperament, developmental strengths and needs, sensory responsiveness, and preferred ways of playing and interacting. This tool helps parents to read and understand their child’s non-verbal signals and to respond appropriately. Early detection of delays or inconsistencies in development can help set-up the proper care and treatment to put children on the right path.

Over the past few decades, one of the bona fide revolutions in mental health treatment has involved the use of modern, FDA-approved medications for certain mental disorders. A careful medication regimen under close supervision of a physician can reduce overall levels of distress, promoting a more appropriate adjustment to situational stressors, as well as facilitating improvements through psychotherapy.

Medications are often combined with psychotherapy for treating mental and emotional disorders.

Ashburn Psychological Services has Board Certified Child, Adolescent, Adult and Forensic psychiatrists to treat and diagnose clients for improved mental well being.

We serve all of Northenr Virginia and invite you to contact us to discuss your specific needs and how we can best be of service to you. Our office manager, Christine Kutt, can be reached directly at: (703) 723-2999.

Perhaps one of the biggest challenges faced by educators is how best to teach students who present with difficulty learning. Even gifted children often possess an uneven set of cognitive abilities, which in turn could negatively affect learning and academic performance. Obtaining a profile of a student’s learning strengths and weaknesses through professional assessment is essential to understand how best to teach such a student and to determine appropriate interventions, accommodations and/or school or classroom placement.

Psychoeducational testing evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of a student’s abilties, learning style and educational achievement. Through Psychoeducational testing Reading, Writing and Mathematics Disorders are determined. Standardized educational testing will also reveal the extent to which a student’s problems fall in the mild, moderate or severe range when compared to same aged peers and whether other factors are contributing to or exacerbating functioning. It is well established that children and adolescents with learning disorders have a much higher rate of ADD and ADHD, as well as behavioral problems. Thus, it is essential to further identify or rule-out potential processing problems such as: Dyslexia, AD(H)D, Auditory Processing Disorder, Auditory and Visual Memory difficulties, Sensory Processing Disorder, Executive Functioning Disorder, Nonverbal Learning Disability and Visual-Motor Integration Disorder.

After assessing an individual’s test results, APS will provide a comprehensive report, an in-depth feedback session and specific recommendations to address diagnosis and treatment. Ashburn Psychological Services (APS) will serve to determine if the student is eligible for education services under IDEA or ADA. Such accommodations could include: preferential seating, 1:1 certified tutoring, extended time on tests and/or alternative examination formats. Depending on the child or adolescent’s needs, APS clinicians are trained to work closely with parents, schools, tutors, educational consultants, and other specialists to implement a plan of action to get the student back on track.

APS also provides admissions testing and IQ testing for independent, private schools.
We are certified independent evaluators for Loudoun, Fairfax, Prince William, Stafford, and Fauquier Counties.

To discuss your needs and how we can best support you, we invite you to contact our office manager, Christine Kutt, at: (703) 723-2999

To schedule a consultation or to discuss your needs and how we can best be of service to you, we invite you to contact our office manager, Christine Kutt, at: (703) 723-2999. We also invite you to visit our Website at www.ashburnpsych.com to learn more about our team and services.
